ESL 3 Syllabus

ESL 3-Advanced English
Course Objective: Students will be able to develop English vocabulary and grammatical structures in order to successfully communicate. Students will develop their listening, speaking, reading and writing skills. As students progress through the course, they will be able to develop their literary and analytical skills in order to be successful in their high school coursework.
Textbook: Edge: CENGAGE Learning, National Geographic Learning 2014
Listening: Students will listen to English from native speakers via their teacher and other media. They will also listen to English spoken by their peers. They must focus their attention on the speaker’s message in order to comprehend and produce a meaningful response.
Speaking: Students will have the daily opportunity to practice speaking in structured conversations with their peers. Also, there will be several projects which require the students to present information to the class using English skills.
Reading: Students will be reading a variety of modified texts, including short stories, poetry, and expository writing, with guidance and support from their teacher and peers. Students will learn various strategies to help them comprehend a text in their second language. They will also learn analytical skills necessary to interpret both literature and images.
Writing: Students will be writing on a daily basis, practicing the grammar structures and the new vocabulary. They will write a variety of personal narratives, descriptions, reports, poems, and reflections based on the literature. They will also have the opportunity to create their own works of creative fiction in response to various texts.

Absence and Late Work:
If you have an excused absence or miss class due to school-related activities, you have two days for each day not in class to make up work missed. It is your responsibility to make up missed work.
Unexcused Absence and Tardy:
Standard TCU Policy pg. 38-40 in student handbook
Late Work Policy:
Daily Work= 2 points off for each day late
Projects worth 50 points+ will be 50% off for 1 day late and
will not be accepted after that.

Quarter 1 = 43%
Quarter 2 = 43%
Final = 14%
100% total semester grade
The following assessments listed below must be completed and turned in. This will allow you the opportunity to receive a passing grade and receive credit for this course:
Be on time and prepared for class.
Be respectful to yourself and others.
Use positive and appropriate language.
Follow TCU requirements for appropriate use of electronics, and only at appropriate times.
CHEATING AND PLAGIARISM:
Cheating and plagiarism are prohibited. Students who cheat or commit plagiarism on any assessment or assignment will be given a failing grade for that assessment or assignment and will be disciplined in accordance with the school district’s “Student Discipline” policy. A student who knowingly gave the assignment to be cheated from may also receive a zero for that assignment and/or face other disciplinary action.
Plagiarism: Practice of taking someone else's work or ideas and passing them off as one's own.
Types of cheating are as follows, but please know that this is not a comprehensive list as new ways and ideas are developed continuously. Examples include, but are not limited to:
Taking pictures and/or the sharing out on social media or by other means
The unauthorized use of past tests, exams, assessments, &/or projects
Electronic manipulation of work to claim as one’s own material.
